<p>The 167th AS is the group's flying unit and has operated the C-130E since 1990. The unit was established as the 167th Fighter Squadron in March 1947 at Kanawha County Airport with P-47Ds. The 167th was mobilized in October 1950 and converted to F-84Bs one year later before deploying to RAF Manston, UK. The squadron was returned to state control in July 1952 and converted to the F-51D as the 167th FIS. The unit moved to Martinsburg MAP in December 1955. The 167th was the final ANG unit to fly the F-51D, converting from Mustangs during early 1957. T-28As were flown until September 1957, when the unit converted to F-86Hs with a redesignation to a Tactical Fighter Squadron. It became the 167th Aeromedical Transport Squadron with the C-119C in 1961 and the C-121C in 1963. The squadron joined the 167th ATG in January 1964, and was redesignated the 167th MAS in January 1966 and 167th AAS in August 1968. The unit converted to the C-130A in June 1972 as the 167th TAS, upgrading to the C-130B in 1978 and moving to Shepherd Field in 1981.
